Investigating Bacterial Microbiomes with Transfer RNA Arrays

Chris Woodruff
WEHI Bioinformatics

Transfer RNAs often occur in clusters in bacterial genomes. Here I outline an investigation of the feasibility of using this genomic feature to quantitatively characterise bacterial microbiomes using long read, whole genome shotgun sequencing. I describe the datasets used for the investigation so far, provide a simple theoretical analysis that supports the feasibility of the approach, describe the analysis method that leads to quantitative microbiome profiling, and present some early results. I conclude with some assessment of the limitations and potential value of this approach.
