Estimating Mitochondrial DNA Copy Number

Terry Speed
WEHI Bioinformatics

Mitochondria are often called the powerhouses of the cell, although they are involved in several other important tasks. They have (typically multiple copies of) their own genomes. Mitochondrial biogenesis is the process by which cells increase mitochondrial numbers. The capacity for mitochondrial biogenesis has been shown to decrease with age, and decreased mitochondrial function has been associated disease. For these and other reasons, it is of interest to estimate the number of copies of the mitochondrial genome (mtDNA CN) in different human cell types in normal and disease states. This talk is about doing so using whole genome sequencing of cell samples from different human tissues.
