Zoom WebinarPre-empting the next COVID: diagnosing infection through genomic testing
Grace HallWEHI Bioinformatics
Prevention is the best medicine. Through genomic testing, the impact of a future pandemic may be muted, or even avoided. In this talk I will discuss how COVID-19 has driven social acceptance of pathogen testing, and how a universal pathogen test is possible using sequencing. I will focus on one aspect of such a test - strain-level characterisation of bacteria, and how a new tool called NanoMAP provides this ability.
To finish, I will reflect on lessons learned from writing a bioinformatics tool from scratch, and from completing a research project in general.
If you would like to do some pre-reading, the NanoMAP paper is available here: https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.10.18.344739v1.full
