The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) emerged in December 2019 and has spread globally ; causing a pandemic of respiratory illness designated coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Robust blood biomarkers that reflect tissue damage are urgently needed to better stratify and triage infected patients. There is a clear need to distinguish the host SARS-CoV-2 transcriptomic response from other infectious triggers of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) such as influenza virus ; which may be circulating concurrently with SARS-CoV-2. In this talk I will discuss a collaborative project on COVID-19 lung spatial transcriptomics and the bioinformatics approaches used to identify candidate novel biomarkers and pathways involved in viral infections and to enable differentiation between COVID-19 and influenza. An in-depth picture of the pulmonary transcriptional landscape COVID-19 ; pandemic H1N1 (pH1N1) influenza disease patients and uninfected control patients were generated ; offering new insights into the pathogenesis of SARS-COV-2 to aid in patient triage and treatment.;;;;
