Negotiating the Labyrinth of the Linear Genome

Chris Woodruff
WEHI Bioinformatics

The linear genome has many different biologically-relevant features scattered along it. Feature distributions do not appear to be amenable to simple descriptions, but having valid descriptions would be valuable. This talk will outline work being undertaken in an attempt to get such a description. In particular, details will be presented on features such as homopolymers, 3-mers (including codons), 5 methyl cytosine methylation, and SNPs. The talk will also cover the likely importance of segmentation for this program of work, with specific focus on the work of Bickel et al.(2010) that, inter alia, supported the ENCODE project.
