NaNanopore sequencing: a current affair
Martin A SmithGarvan Institute of Medical Research
Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) have developed a sequencing platform that eludes the prevalent sequence by synthesis paradigm in genomics. ONT sequencing is predicated on measuring characteristic disruptions in ionic current as a bio-polymer transits through a membrane-bound protein nanopore. Stigmatised by high error rates in its early developmental releases ; the latest versions of the pocket sized MinION sequencer outshine the competition in most aspects.
I will present an in-depth review of the technology ; exposing its strengths ; limitations ; distinctive applications ; and future potential. I will also discuss the bioinformatics challenges and opportunities pertaining to the unique data produced by this disruptive technology.
