Design and initial analysis of large-scale omics studies

Terry Speed
WEHI Bioinformatics

Many groups are carrying out large-scale genomic ; transcriptomic ; proteomic or related studies. A current example is NIH's LINCS program. With such studies ; there is an inevitable need for some kind of normalization. Biologists have long made use of controls of different kinds to monitor unwanted variation ; such as negative control probes ; spike-ins and replicate reference samples. However ; we can also use these controls to normalize. I shall explain how. As soon as we have effective tools for the analysis of data ; including controls ; from a given kind of study ; we should turn our attention to the design of these studies. This talk is based on joint work with Johann Gagnon-Bartsch of the University of Michigan ; and Laurent Jacob of the CNRS ; Lyon.
